Rapid Fire ?

Q. What Investor has influenced your career the most and why?
A. My mentor Tom Allen has been the most influential person in my career. He is a portfolio manager at Fidelity and has really helped me develop my career since the very beginning. Helping me understand what skills I needed to be successful.
Q. What was one of the hardest things for you to overcome in investing?
A. Trusting my instincts.
Q. How has your investing process evolved over the years?
A. Time is knowledge in our business, the more you learn from the major events in the markets the more you can control your behavioral response and how you can exploit other investor’s behavior, which is extremely predictable, especially in black swan events.
Q. What is one attribute that you believe every investor should have?
A. Discipline, specifically over your emotions. The less emotional you are as an investor the better.
Q. Favorite Book about Investing?
A. It’s more a book about behavior, but “Risk: The Science and Politics of Fear” by Dan Gardner changed my life and helped me become a better investor.
Q. If you had to pick a profession other than investing, what would it be?
A. Perhaps I like working with alpha males, because my original career dream was to work in the professional sports industry. Specifically I wanted to be a sideline reporter for the NFL or MLB. My undergraduate degree is in sports management and I spent a year working for NESN and the Boston Red Sox before getting into finance.
Q. What’s the best advice you received about Investing?
A. You learn more from your mistakes than your successes, so make sure you always review what went wrong more than what went right.
Q. If you can give a piece of advice to the younger you about investing, what would it be?
A. I really don’t know I’d tell myself about investing it wasn’t something that was ever on my radar screen until I fell into the industry.
Q. Favorite thing to do when not watching the markets?
A. Genealogical research
